Club 1872 Statement – Policing in Maribor

Following receipt of a number of eye witness reports from supporters who travelled to Maribor yesterday, Club 1872 is extremely concerned by the way our fans were treated by the local police. The policing was heavy handed and batons and tear gas were used indiscriminately against our supporters, who had mixed with locals in the main square throughout the day in a friendly and positive manner. Some older and younger supporters were caught up in this police action which was unnecessary and irresponsible.

The vast majority of our supporters showed admirable restraint under very difficult circumstances and conducted themselves positively in support of our team despite this police provocation.

We are awaiting a date for a meeting with Police Scotland to discuss recent and historic policing at home games but we will also be speaking to Rangers about how we can work together to try to improve supporter safety when travelling in Europe.
